StreetGames Gloucester
Project case study: StreetGames Gloucester
StreetGames Gloucester was started in July 2008 and makes use of the multi-sports facilities that the council has built across the city.
Coaches use the facilities to teach football/futsal; tag rugby, tennis, kwik cricket; basketball; rounders and StreetCheer among other activities.
The project has two seasonal programmes. In the winter the multi-sports facilities are floodlit and use is also made of school and community halls.
In the summer parks and open spaces are used as well as the multisports facilities.
Over 220 young people took advantage of the StreetGames activities in Gloucester during its first summer season with a further 60 during the winter.
The local leisure centre, run by the Aspire Sports and Cultural Trust, is also used for some sessions on a pay as you go basis.
All activities are run by qualified sports’ coaches, with an emphasis on participation and fun.
Funding mainly comes from the local authority and a grant from the Football Foundation.
Morgana Lovell, Sport in the Community Officer for Gloucester City Council, who leads the StreetGames project, says: “one of the best things has been that we are working with community organisations and people on the ground. There are partnerships with residents and young people and we are using local people to help deliver the activities.”
Through the Cooperative StreetGames Young Volunteer project Gloucester has some 10 volunteers.
Partner organisations include: resident groups; youth service; Gloucester City home and the Police.
