This month, StreetGames is shining a spotlight on the great work being done by the Northampton Street Sports Project!

The programme - managed and delivered by Northampton Leisure Trust - is a Doorstep Sports club that provides 12 free multi sports sessions per week for young people living in deprived communities across Northampton. All sessions are delivered in 'Multi Use Games Areas' by a combination of Street Sports Activators and local volunteers. At the 2017 StreetGames National Awards the project was awarded the Matt Kendle prize, with a further member of staff being presented with the Coach of the Year accolade - having progressed from participant to activator thanks to the training and volunteering opportunities provided to him by the project.

The team has also recently started working in partnership with Prospects, a careers service provider for Northamptonshire (specifically focusing on working with NEET young people) to design and deliver a 6 week sports employability course, delivered at the Lings Forum Leisure Centre - a Northampton Leisure Trusts site. Each three-hour event comprises a sports-based session led by a Northampton Leisure Trust Coach, a Sports Activator mentoring session, and an employability skills workshop. The final week of the programme sees all participants given the opportunity to attend a StreetGames Sports Activator workshop. Two courses have been delivered so far and 17 NEET young people have taken part. Five of these young people have gone on to secure employment (one with Northampton Leisure Trust) and four have started volunteering on the Northampton Street Sports Project to continue their journey towards employment.

Earlier this year, the Project launched its pilot for an early-intervention sports mentoring scheme, in partnership with Northamptonshire Police and StreetGames. The project provides 8-10 weeks’ worth of 1-2-1 mentoring support for young people known to the police, or at risk of entering the criminal justice system. The aim is to refer as many young people as possible onto the doorstep sports club when they are ready.

StreetGames wishes the scheme and the Street Sports project the very best of luck!
