The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Hunger, chaired by Frank Field MP, today released a major new report.

The report, entitled 'Hungry Holidays' is the result of the APPG's inquiry into holiday hunger, which took evidence from a range of key players in measuring and addressing holiday hunger, including StreetGames.

Introducing the report which estimates three million children and young people are at risk, Mr. Field who is MP for Birkenhead wrote that the aim of the APPG is "to ignite an anger that will spread throughout the country and will not abate until hunger as we know it has been abolished." You can access their full report here.

Welcoming the launch of the report, StreetGames CEO Jane Ashworth commented:

“Holiday hunger, inactivity and isolation are very real issues facing young people all over the country.  Experts believe three million children are affected nationwide every holiday. It’s encouraging to see recommendations to allocate more funding to holiday hunger initiatives that will alleviate some of these issues for the poorest families in our society.

In our experience, some of the best holiday hunger programmes are delivered by schools and by community organisations. Community organisations, like those in the StreetGames network, are well placed to tackle isolation, inactivity and hunger. They are in the right place with the right coaches, who know what will keep young people coming back for both the activities and the food.

We support the recommendation that any funding provision gives local authorities the freedom to deliver sessions in a way that makes the most of local expertise. At the moment, we are fundraising for 250 Fit and Fed projects that will launch this summer and any contribution towards this is great – whether from Government, Lottery funding or public donations."
