StreetGames’ ‘Us Girls Wales’ programme has been named the Sporting Experience of the Year for 2017. The prize, handed out as part of this year’s Wales Sport Awards was granted to the winners in recognition of their efforts to energise and empower disadvantaged young women through sport and physical activity.

Judges noted that the programme had achieved “staggering results [in] attracting new ‘hard-to-reach’ female participants, volunteers, coaches and leaders”.

Following her acceptance of the award, StreetGames Wales’ Knowledge & Insight Manager Charly Wathan commented:

“We work with 150 brilliant organisations who care about young women and we work together on the frontlines in local communities to make a difference to their lives. This award is very much for those 26 lead projects, 300 volunteers and the entire StreetGames Wales network that provides access to high-quality sport and physical activity for over 5,000 participants.”

Charly was joined on stage by StreetGames’ Deputy Chief Executive Mark Lawrie, who spoke to the programme’s focus on fun and friendship, as well as physical fitness. They were flanked by a number of StreetGames staff and project delegates, including representatives from Neath Port Talbot PASS, Us Girls Caerphilly and the Aneurin Leisure Boys and Girls clubs of North Wales.

This year’s event, held at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, saw 12 awards being dished out in total, with Us Girls Wales contesting a highly-competitive category that included both the Young Ambassadors Programme and Disability Sport Wales – the latter of which also came away with the coveted ‘Organisation of the Year’ award.

Operating as a StreetGames’ ‘sister project’, Us Girls Wales combines the lessons of the industry-leading Doorstep Sport programme – which brings sporting activity to disadvantaged young people – with a special range of female-focused initiatives designed to put women and girls at ease while being active.
