Politicians decide the future of community sport. Westminster parliamentarians set the English sports strategy. The Welsh Government decides the future of sport in Wales as the Scottish Government does for sport in Scotland. Westminster also decides how much of our taxes will be given to local authorities. Government appoints the chairs and boards of Sport England and Sport Wales and also the leadership of the other Lottery distributors.

It is the local politicians who decide where a local council will invest the 60% of a unitary authority council’s budget that isn’t ring-fenced for education. The local council sets the pricing policy for leisure centres and decides how much to invest in youth services and community sport in their city, borough or district. Sport is not a statutory service: its future lies in the hands of the local politicians. A council is within its rights to spend nothing on sport. The average spend is about 2%.

StreetGames seizes every opportunity to promote Doorstep Sport in the policy making process. StreetGames submits papers to consultations, gives written and spoken evidence to Parliamentary Inquires and attends working parties or scrutiny committees in local authorities. Such submissions and contributions are not limited to sports policy: StreetGames has an interest in the allround health and wellbeing of young people.

For the most part disadvantaged young people find themselves outside of the political process. Parliament, politics, and local councillors are distant from the circumstances of their young lives. Through Doorstep Sport young people meet politicians and go to the places where decisions about their lives and communities are made. Doorstep Sport brings MPs and Councillors into contact with enterprising and exemplary young leaders from communities across the country.

Politicians of all sorts value Doorstep Sport. StreetGames has enjoyed all party support since the launch event in the Houses of Parliament in 2007 that was hosted by Bassetlaw MP John Mann. They know that Doorstep Sport is a cost effective and efficient approach to changing lives, changing communities and changing sport.
