A new collaboration between European cities, NGOs and facility specialists.

In today’s society where parks and green spaces are increasingly at risk, construction of more high rise buildings threatens the existing urban space within our cities, many people are facing increased barriers to participation and are faced with a reduced amount of opportunities to engage in physical activity outdoor in our cities.

StreetGames, in partnership with Birmingham City Council are the UK partners for the MOVEment Spaces project which aims to enhance innovation in the delivery of physical activity programmes in existing urban spaces and facilities.

In February, we took part in the kick-off meeting for this new EU-supported project, which brings together five European cities, five NGOs and experts in promoting facilities for physical activity in urban spaces. The project is led by the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA).

Over the next two years, StreetGames will be drawing on our experiences and the network’s experience to show how urban spaces and in particular parks, city squares and open water facilities can be activated through three themes of partnership working between local authorities and local sports organisations, engaging hard to reach populations and stakeholder involvement.

We will gather a collection of good practices and develop innovation and knowledge-sharing online platforms so that other cities and organisations working in this area can learn from each other and take action together.

Project partners:

  • Coordinator: ISCA
  • Cities: Barcelona (ES), Birmingham (UK), Paris (FR), Plovdiv (BG), Wroclaw (PL)
  • Grassroots sport NGOs: BG Be Active (BG), StreetGames (UK), Eurofitness (ES), UFOLEP (FR), V4Sport (PL)
