This is a case study of a StreetGames project in the Crusaders Rugby League Club which runs a community programme aimed at promoting youth activity and tackling problems of anti-social behaviour in North Wales. The programme began in 2010 and is in partnership with North Wales Police, the Wrexham Community Safety Partnership and Community First.

Rugby tackles youth engagement - Street Rugby in Yorkshire

During the summer of 2010 The Rugby Football League (RFL) developed a pilot project to engage 14-19 year olds living within 15 disadvantaged areas across Yorkshire in StreetRugby. The intervention introduced a derivate of rugby league, Street Rugby (a version of non-contact/ touch rugby) into existing youth sessions that were provided by a range of partners including NACRO, Youth Offending Teams, Youth Centres and Young People’s Services.

We have analysed the work we do in community sport to change sport, change communities and change lives. In this paper we give examples of how we’re helping to create safer communities in areas of high crime, increasing volunteering and social action, and improving health and well-being for young people in disadvantaged communities.
