Twenty intrepid explorers took on one of the most famous British treks this weekend - the 3 Peaks Challenge - in aid of StreetGames.

The 3 Peaks challenge comprises climbing the highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales within 24 hours. The challengers, all employees of Grant Thornton UK, which has chosen StreetGames as its Charity of the Year for 2012, trekked throughout the day and night over Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis and Snowdon in Wales, with their only respite coming in the minibus rides between the mountains.

Split into four teams of five, the group have so far raised £12,042 and will continue to fundraise as they strive to meet their target of £16,500. The group was led and supported by trek organisers Adventure Café, which also provided advice and support in the build-up to the challenge

Jayne Brownridge, National Corporate Responsibility Executive at Grant Thornton, said: “This is the fourth year we have offered this strenuous challenge to our employees and each year they never fail to come forward to test themselves personally and physically for our charity partnerships. 2012 has seen teams come together from our London, Gatwick, Birmingham, Milton Keynes and Cambridge offices and they have demonstrated true grit in completing this successfully for StreetGames, our 2012 Olympic charity partner. Thank you".

Martin Verrall, Grant Thornton 'Peaking Duck’ 3 Peaks challenger: “In just under 24 hours we have climbed the three highest peaks in the UK. The experience may have broken our bodies but it couldn't break our spirits. In the words of our great leader Nick Essex 'pain is temporary, glory is permanent'. This challenge was one of the best experiences of my life and wouldn't have been possible without the support of the team.”

Jane Ashworth, StreetGames Chief Executive, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support of Grant Thornton and the CSR culture that runs through it over the past nine months. This 3 Peaks challenge has been typical of its employees’ dedication to giving something back and StreetGames is proud to be associated with such a trusted and socially responsible organisation.”
