StreetGames and MHT launch YUSport hub in Lambeth
StreetGames and Metropolitan Housing Trust (MHT) London showcased the new YUSport hub at the St Martins Community Centre in Lambeth yesterday (8th February) with a taster session of fencing, provided by British Fencing.
YUSport hubs are multi-sport hubs for young people in deprived areas that will run 32 sessions a week. They are funded by a grant from the Mayor of London’s Legacy Sports Participation Fund. The St Martins hub in Lambeth, where yesterday’s event took place, is part of eight hubs being rolled-out across London.
The Mayor’s Fund was seeking sports projects that would increase participation in sport, promote community development and give a sporting chance to 9,000 young adults in the target areas.
StreetGames is leading in the delivery of the eight YUSport hubs and will work in partnership with three housing associations, one social enterprise, seven local authorities, Pro-Active London and national governing bodies of sport (NGB).
The second YUSport showcase takes place on the 16th February at the hub in Waltham Forest, which is in partnership with the Circle 33 housing association. This event will take the form of a full-blown StreetGames Neighbourhood Festival and the young people will show off their boxing, dance and table tennis skills, as well as take part in a football tournament.
On YUSport hubs Jane Ashworth, CEO of StreetGames, said: "StreetGames is delighted to have been awarded the funding to deliver this exciting partnership project. With London 2012 around the corner, YUSport hubs give us a great opportunity to provide access to new sporting opportunities in local communities, working with local people to create an Olympic legacy."
Anthony Savery, Sports Development Officer for MHT London, said: “This is a great opportunity for young people in Lambeth to try their hand at a new sport and we are delighted to see St Martins Community Centre become a YUSport hub.”
