The UK’s No.1 female Skateboarder, Lucy Adams, visited Us Girls Hastings on Tuesday evening (16th October) to give tuition to local skaters. Us Girls is our Sport England-funded programme which aims to get 30,000 young women more physically active.

Lucy has signed up to become an Us Girls Champion and to mark the involvement headed down to the Boyley Skate Park in Hastings. She said: “I think the event was great and it definitely helped to inspire some of the girls that attended. Thank you all for organising and inviting me over, it’s a great project running in Hastings – I’m really impressed.”

Cllr Emily Westley (pictured, above, in green jacket), lead member for leisure for Hastings Borough Council, said: “It was encouraging to see so many young people at the skate park, in particular, all the young girls that came along to have some hands on tuition with Lucy. She is a great role model for girls and young women and, it would be wonderful to see more girls taking up this activity.

“Us Girls aims to encourage more young women to get active, enjoy sport and meet new friends, with Lucy’s help this week we hope that this will be the start of skateboarding for girls here in Hastings.

“The Boyley Skate Park is a fantastic resource for local people. The Council are currently working with local partners and skate park users to raise funds for the proposed phase 2 extension.”

Karen Keohane, Us Girls National Programme Manager, said: “Lucy Adams has had an immediate impact as an Us Girls Champion. During the event we had girls visiting the skate park for the first time and expressing an interest in learning to skate. It was refreshing to see young women wanting to get involved in a predominately male sport. Lucy is already helping to break down barriers and give the girls the confidence to give it a go.”
