Us Girls rocks Birmingham
The second Us Girls Rocks Festival took place over the weekend (Saturday 20th Oct) at Nechells Community Sports Centre in Birmingham. The event, which featured a wide-range of free sporting activities, was aimed at encouraging young women aged 14 to 25 to get active and have fun.
Us Girls, our Sport England-funded programme, aims to get 30,000 young women from deprived communities more physically active. It showed that a grassroots London 2012 legacy for women was alive and well as over 100 young women from across the West Midlands came together to take part in both traditional and non-traditional sports and activities. These ranged from Zumba, boot camp and hula hoop fitness to badminton, football and netball.
The majority of the participants were taking part in sport for the first time and were joined by former Team GB badminton player, Donna Kellogg MBE, who met the girls and answered questions about her sport and career.
The female only event was run by StreetGames, FITCAP and Maddisons and had a fun and friendly atmosphere with music, prize give-ways, free beauty treatments, hair styling, health checks and even a game of bingo on offer in addition to the sport.
Kim Clark of Us Girls, said: “It was an amazing day, the turnout was fantastic. I saw a lot of young women playing sport with big smiles on their faces, which is exactly what Us Girls is about.”
