Us Girls rocks Leigh

The first Us Girls Rocks Festival was held over the past weekend (Sunday 14th October 2012) at Leigh Sports Village, Greater Manchester. 

Us Girls, our Sport England-funded programme, aims to get 30,000 young women more physically active. It brought together over 150 girls in a safe and comfortable environment to try new activities, meet new friends and have fun.

A range of activities were available for the girls to try including boxing, handball, netball, hoop & tone, yoga and table tennis. The girls were joined by Team GB judo player and Us Girls Champion, Sophie Cox, who led judo taster sessions. In addition the FA provided an interactive football area and England and Lincoln Ladies star, Jess Clarke, spoke to the attendees about her life as a semi-pro footballer.

As well as the sports on offer, the girls were also treated to free beauty treatments including manicures, eyebrow waxing, hair styling and health checks.

There was a fun and friendly atmosphere throughout the day, with prize give-ways – in the form of New Look vouchers and iPod shuffles – as well as free Us Girls t-shirts for all.

Helen Crowley, Us Girls Field Worker and Knowledge Manager, said: “It was an amazing day, the turnout was fantastic. I saw a lot of young women playing sport with big smiles on their faces, which is exactly what Us Girls is about.”

The event was co-ordinated by members of the Active Women consortium.

There are three more Us Girls Rocks Festivals, with places still available. Dates are as follows:

  • Saturday, 20th October - Nechells Community Sports Centre, Birmingham

  • Tuesday, 30th October - Eston Sports Academy, Middlesbrough

  • Thursday, 1st November - Hammersmith and West London College, Hammersmith Campus, London
