“Only 2% of Sports media reporting in the UK covers Women Sport”, according to Sue Tibballs, CEO of the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation. “Short-changing women’s sport in its profile, investment and leadership and making today’s agenda for women - to be ‘thin’ rather than ‘healthy’.
A number of sporting NGBs, particularly The FA, will be supporting the launch of The Women’s Sporting Calendar 2012 at The HAC in London next Friday 14 October. They will be joined by Us Girls, part of The StreetGames/Active Women Consortium – www.usgirls.org.uk, The Association for Physical Education – www.afpe.org.uk and The Encephalitis Society - www.afpe.org.uk and the Girls Schools Association www.gsa.uk.com . All of whom are keen to raise the profile of women’s sport, encourage women and girls to take part, motivate them with the many benefits and confidence sport can provide and underscore some of the fantastic UK women role models which exist.
Fourteen A3 colour pages – depicting 24 outstanding British Women athletes - all showing determination, confidence and tenacity. The calendar also details some 300 non-Olympic women’s sporting events – when, where, how to watch them . . . . or even try them!
The calendar also contains an introduction from Sarah Winckless, World Champion Rower,
Olympic medallist and Chair of the British Olympic Athletes Commission.
“I am proud to see that this calendar is supporting women in sport for both Olympic and non-Olympic events”, says Sarah. “When you watch this year's fantastic programme of sport, remember how hard all the athletes and players have worked get there. Think about how important 'The Games' are for elite athletes but remember how important games, sport and physical activity are for all of us - particularly women and girls.”
We are proud to be launching the calendar and hope you will visit some of the women’s sporting events listed, try one of the sports featured and cheer on all of the 24 British athletes or players in 2012.
The entire project profits will be donated to women’s sport. Three women’s/sporting charities are promoting the calendar to raise funds directly and 20% from each online sale will be donated to the purchaser’s selected NGB using our ‘Drop Down Donation’ box – again to support women’s sporting projects.
Copies can be ordered online - www.illustratus.co.uk/shop/wsc2012.html
