News StreetGames projects at the Women’s World Cup Final This July, StreetGames was honoured to attend the FIFA Women’s World Cup final event in Lyon, bringing with it several of the charity’s most deserving and enthusiastic participants. The game, a highly competitive fixture played out between the United States and The Netherlands, ended in victory for the US, following goals from American captain Megan Rapinoe and teammate Rose Lavelle. The final, which boasted an attendance of nearly 58,000 spectators and supporters, also included five lucky young footballers and coaches – members of assorted StreetGames projects, who travelled from as far afield as Wales, London and Newcastle to be there on the day. The girls: Amy, Falhat, Fatima, Stacey and Michelle, were all winners of a special competition held by StreetGames’ and its long-time corporate partners Coca-Cola GB – who provided tickets to the event. In addition to attending the match itself, the girls were also treated to an open top bus tour of the city, as well as the company of star Reading player and England International Fara Williams. Here’s what the girls themselves made of the experience: Stacey, a participant with Hat-Trick Newcastle said: “The atmosphere was amazing and the game itself was really good. I was excited to be there sitting in the crowd and absolutely loved every minute of it. I’ve had the most amazing time ever and the people I have met are all absolutely brilliant and friends for life! I never thought I would actually see myself at a World Cup final but it just shows dreams do come true”. Falhat, who attends sessions with Sport at the Heart in London said: “I very much enjoyed my experience - getting a chance to see the final and meeting so many new and beautiful people. I’m so thankful that I got the chance to do something like this. This is a memory that I’ll cherish forever”. Michelle, also from Hat-Trick Newcastle said: The stadium’s atmosphere was phenomenal! To be a part of the crowd of 58,000 was such a memorable experience. [We] couldn’t have done this without StreetGames, without you guys our dreams would never have come true!” Fatima, also of Sport at the Heart, said: “The World Cup was amazing, the turn out and the atmosphere was just mesmerising. I enjoyed watching my national team and watching my first live women’s game, it was also my first live football game and it has to be the best experience of my life! Thanks to StreetGames and all the people who participated in making this an inspirational and memorable experience!” StreetGames would like to extend its thanks to Coca-Cola GB and M&C Saatchi for providing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to five of the organisation’s aspiring players and coaches. Thank you!
