News The Duke of Sussex pays special visit #FitandFed in Streatham StreetGames was honoured and delighted to welcome the Duke of Sussex to its recent half-term #FitandFed session in Streatham. His Royal Highness was on hand to chat with some of the area’s best and brightest young volunteers, as they led on two special activity sessions aimed at tackling holiday hunger, inactivity and isolation. This was followed by a nutritious lunchtime meal for participants, delivered in part by the Duke himself! The day’s visit marked the 7th such occasion that the Duke has lent his support to StreetGames and its goal of empowering disadvantaged young people through sport - most recently back in May, when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex named StreetGames as one of seven Royal Wedding donation recipients. StreetGames’ CEO Jane Ashworth, who was also in attendance, presented HRH with a large teddy bear, a gift from the project’s young participants to the Duke’s first child, due later this year. Commenting on the visit, Jane stated: “The Duke’s involvement does wonders for holiday hunger awareness, and we are enormously grateful for his continued interest in, and support for StreetGames’ work. Projects like these help to address the very real problem of lacking childhood nutrition, an issue that now affects up to 3 million young people throughout the UK. Food poverty has all kinds of debilitating effects on a child’s quality of life, and that’s something that we as an organisation are determined to tackle, not only through the important work of #FitandFed but also by bringing together a range of other sector leaders, as we have today”. StreetGames would like to thank all those who helped to make Tuesday’s royal visit such a memorable and exciting event, including staff and volunteers at the Streatham Youth and Community Trust, whose passion and hard work plays such an important part in the lives of local participants. The charity would also like to thank all of its guests, drawn from a number of local and nationwide groups, including LMCT, Groundwork London, The Big Give, The PIMCO Foundation, Give With, Creative Sport & Leisure, London Sport, Lambeth Council and Chuka Umunna MP, on hand to take part in a productive discussion of the issues surrounding holiday hunger, as well as the prospects for greater collaboration. Most of all, StreetGames would like to thank the Duke of Sussex himself for his continued support, encouragement, and passion for young people’s issues. Thank you.
