3.5 million UK children currently live in poverty, with fewer than 1/4 meeting national guidelines for recommended daily activity.

Sport teaches many skills from teamwork, ambition, self-motivation and creates communities. It has such an important role in our daily lives keeping us healthy, energetic and positively impacting our mental health. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and physical activity has a major role in impacting this.

This is why I have chosen to support the charity StreetGames, who harnesses the power of sport to create a positive change in the lives of disadvantaged young people across the UK. They are providing programmes which are making communities safer, healthier and more successful by providing role models, and teaching young people the value of health whilst empowering them through sport to kick-start a cycle of positive change that echoes throughout their entire community.

To support this charity, I am running the Oxford Half Marathon (13th October) and cycling in Palace to Palace (7th October) to support the StreetGames UK wide campaign that is helping to train 21,000 youth sports coaches and volunteers in mental health awareness skills by 2021. Monika Dochan
