News Newcastle's Best Summer Ever ‘Newcastle’s Best Summer Ever’ is a new holiday activity scheme aimed at supporting the city’s 5 to 18 year olds through a combination of sport, play and nutritious meals. Funded by the Department for Education, this innovative £1.1 million-pound project brings together more than 70 local partners, including Newcastle City Council, GLL and FareShare, to empower more young people than ever before to remain Fit and Fed through the summer. The scheme follows on from a successful pilot programme trialled in the region back in 2018, utilising StreetGames' extensive sector knowledge and evidence base to assist local young people , families and communities to address the issues of holiday hunger, social isolation and physical inactivity. With holiday-time activity rates dropping by as much as 18 times the national average within Newcastle's most deprived wards, the need for greater action here is clear. Newcastle currently records the highest levels of need in all the North East, with almost 20,000 school children being classed as deprived, and more than half of that figure receiving Free School Meals. The city also falls far below national averages for both life expectancy and Physical Activity Guidelines, with some 25% of Year 6 pupils now being classed as obese.Working across three specially designed cluster areas, NBSE projects will work together to ensure that each and every one of its young participants receives 16 days of 'fun-first' physical activity over the summer break. In doing so, StreetGames and its partners will work to increase attendees' confidence levels and familiarity with local projects, thereby promoting a 'sporting habit for life'. Families too will benefit, with volunteering opportunities and healthy lifestyle classes also being made available.“In working with Newcastle City Council, as well as hundreds of community organisations, we have developed an exciting, engaging and educational programme of events. Together, we will support more young people, families and communities to experience their best summer ever!”Jane Ashworth, CEO of StreetGamesHear more from Jane, and learn more about Newcastle's Best Summer Ever, at the video link below:For more information, please visit: The Active Newcastle website, including dedicated news page and activity finder.
