StreetGames is pleased to announce that this could very well be ‘Newcastle’s Best Summer Ever’, as the organisation launches a £1.1-million-pound scheme, funded by the Department for Education, aimed at supporting the city’s children and young people through sport, play and nutritious meals.

Newcastle’s Best Summer Ever, which brings together more than 70 local partners, including Newcastle City Council, GLL, and FareShare, utilises StreetGames’ extensive evidence base of ‘what works’ to ensure that children and young people remain both Fit and Fed, this summer.

Set to officially launch on Saturday 22nd June, this free activity programme will see thousands of young people, aged 5 to 18, participate in a range of exciting sport and activity offers, served up alongside nourishing food and drink.

The programme was officially unveiled as part of a special sporting session at the Bridgewater Community Primary School, in Newcastle’s west end, which saw participants treated to a variety of exciting taster sessions, including football, dodgeball, and Bollywood dancing.

Jane Ashworth, CEO of StreetGames commented:

“By securing this funding from the Department for Education we intend to provide young people with access to great activities, nutritious meals and fun summertime experiences. In working with Newcastle City Council, as well as hundreds of community organisations, we have developed an exciting, engaging and educational programme of events. Together, we will support more young people, families and communities to experience their best summer ever!”

Newcastle’s Best Summer Ever follows on from a successful pilot programme trialled in the region in 2018. With holiday-time activity rates dropping by as much as 18 times the national average within Newcastle's most deprived wards, the evidence for further action was clear.
