Fit and Fed gives children and young people the opportunity to take part in fun physical activity and enjoy nutritious, healthy meals during the school holidays, tackling three key challenges for families living in under-served communities: food poverty, isolation, and inactivity. Archie attended both the social project and holiday club sessions, meaning he gets year-round access to physical activity.
Archie’s experience
Archie told us that he wasn’t very active before taking part in Fit and Fed, and that he would feel sad if he couldn’t attend sessions anymore.
When asked what he enjoyed most about the sessions, he said: “I like getting stuck in and being active. I like being a role model for new or younger members.”
Archie has also had contact with Healthy Heads Education through the programme. Healthy heads is an organisation that supports children and young people’s mental health.
“I’ve got lots of friends and done new things with people like Rob from Healthy Heads. I liked helping Rob too.”
The impact of Fit and Fed
As well as spending time with friends and having fun, Archie says that Fit and Fed has given him a goal, and a sense of achievement. The sessions have helped him to express his feelings and boosted his confidence to the point where he’s been helping with the activities to encourage his peers to get active too.
When asked what he would say to someone thinking about coming to a Fit & Fed programme, he replied, “It’s like a big family and welcoming and it’s a place to grow and be more independent.”
In summary, “It’s a fun way to be active.”
We couldn’t agree more, Archie.
