Changing Sport – The StreetGames Approach with National Governing Bodies

StreetGames aims to transform the lives of young people in low-income communities through accessible sport and physical activity. We partner with National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and the wider sports sector to create meaningful, sustainable change. Our goal is for all mainstream sports providers to adapt their practices to meet the needs of underserved youth. By collaborating with NGBs, we leverage over 15 years of expertise in Doorstep Sport, offering a clear, evidence-based approach and tools that support inclusive, impactful, and lasting change in the sports sector.

The ‘Participation Gap’

37%

of children and young people from low-income families feel they have opportunities to be physically active, compared to 57% from higher-income families.

32%

of students at schools with high free school meal (FSM) eligibility participate in sports outside the school curriculum three or more times a week, compared to 47% at low-FSM-eligibility schools.

45%

of children from high-FSM-eligibility schools participate in community sports clubs at least once a week, compared to 65% from low-FSM-eligibility schools.

Access to sport and physical activity is unequal, with young people from low-income communities facing significant barriers to participation. Many children in these communities want to be more active but lack access to the right opportunities that meet their needs and interests.

StreetGames exists to bridge this gap. Our Doorstep Sport approach provides accessible and inclusive sports programs specifically designed for young people in underserved communities. By bringing sports to them in a way that resonates, Doorstep Sport not only supports physical health but also empowers young people to overcome challenges, transforming lives and expanding future opportunities.

NGB Core Offer of Support

We appreciate that different organisations need different levels of support; therefore, we have developed a core offer of support – available to all NGBs and wider sport sector partners. We offer support around seven key themes through a variety of different methods, including online webinars and training, communities of learning, sharing of insight and case studies, online toolkits and opportunities to be involved in campaigns.

NGB Enhanced Offer of Support

Our enhanced support offer is designed for organisations committed to making sports more accessible to young people in low-income, underserved communities. We seek long-term partnerships with National Governing Bodies (NGBs) ready to drive strategic, systemic change.
