This introductory three-hour session raises awareness of young people’s mental health in community sport settings. Designed for community sport project leaders, coaches and volunteers, the workshop builds confidence, knowledge and practical skills to help participants better recognise, understand and support young people who may be experiencing a decline in their mental health.
Grounded in the realities of community and doorstep sport, the workshop focuses on practical awareness, trusted relationships and simple tools that can be used within everyday sessions. It supports participants to notice, connect, respond appropriately and raise concerns when addition support might be needed.
Who is it for?
This course is suitable for community sport project leaders, coaches, volunteers, youth workers and staff who support children and young people through sport, physical activity and community-based provision.
Learning outcomes
- Develop knowledge and understanding of young people’s mental health in a community sport context.
- Recognise some signs that a young person may be experiencing a decline in their mental health.
- Build confidence to use practical, trauma-informed and relationship-based responses.
- Understand the boundaries of the role and know when to escalate, signpost or seek additional support

- Learning takes place through a mix of presentations, group discussions and practical workshop activities.
- You will receive resources to keep and refer to whenever you need them.
- When you complete the session, you will receive a certificate to say you are Mental Health Aware in community sport.
