1,000 Young Voices Sunderland

We believe access to sport should be a right, not a privilege. Yet only 45% of children from low-income households meet physical activity guidelines.

The 1,000 Young Voices project (with Platypus Research) was developed to understand young people’s experiences, attitudes, and barriers to being active. The research creates seven youth segments, grouped by shared attitudes, motivations, and behaviours toward sport and activity—from “reluctant” non-participants to highly motivated, competitive young people.

We can now use this research methodology to help understand young people, based on their:

  1. Motivations for being active
  2. Barriers to participation
  3. Emotions felt during activity

About the partners

StreetGames

StreetGames is a UK charity on a mission to bring sport to young people’s doorsteps.

Sport has the power to make young people safer, happier and healthier, but low-income households and under-served communities often miss out.

Together with our network of 1,600 community partners, we’re providing equal opportunities through sport.

Active Sunderland

Active Sunderland’s aim is to develop an ‘All together Active Sunderland – a city where everyone is as active as they can be’.

We are passionate about getting more people active and supporting our communities. To achieve this, we work in partnership with a wide range of partners to improve access and pathways into sport and physical activity.

Sunderland All Together Consortium CIO

We are a partnership organisation made up of several youth work organisations, all of whom share one common goal; to transform the lives of young people across the city of Sunderland and to create a strong, sustainable future for youth work services.

Through collaboration and shared efforts, we aim to provide resources, support, and opportunities that enable young people to thrive and reach their full potential.
