StreetGames Sport for Development Awards 2024: England Doorstep Sport Project of the Year – Epic Partners

Case Study

Epic Partners is transforming young lives in Sneinton and St Ann’s, two of Nottingham’s most underserved areas.

Epic Partners is a Midlands-based charity using engaging sports activities, impactful youth programmes, personalised mentoring, and a variety of other initiatives to empower positive change. The organisation’s programmes create a safe, inclusive, and enriching environment, providing much-needed support and opportunities for young people, right on their doorstep.

Weekly free programmes include their Girls Club, which supports girls aged 6-14 to get active, build confidence, and challenge gender stereotypes in sports, and Health Hub, which allows young people aged 8-16 to come together in a relaxed environment and choose from a range of activities, including essential cooking skills alongside sports and mindfulness activities. Their Sports Academy introduces young people to a wide range of physical activity, helping them develop new skills and explore sports they might not otherwise have access to, while Thursday evening Football & Basketball sessions offer free, inclusive provision and an alternative to expensive club memberships.

Embodying the core ethos of Doorstep Sport, Epic Partners’ projects are not just about the activities themselves; they also support young people to build positive relationships and provide a safe space with trusted adult role models. This is reflected particularly in their weekly Youth Club, which offers 11-16 year-olds a safe space to socialise, reducing antisocial behaviour and supporting them in making positive life choices. Mentoring helps young people to build confidence, self-esteem, and emotional resilience, with the organisation’s holistic approach ensuring that they meet the social, emotional, and physical needs of all participants, creating lasting change in their lives.

Reflecting the powerful and enduring impact of the organisation’s work, several participants have gone on to volunteer with them during the school holidays – further developing their skills and experience while helping younger children to benefit from the activities on offer and to experience the same sense of belonging.
