Unleashing Ambition: TJ’s Evolution from Youth Panel to Matchroom Boxing

TJ, a 17-year-old from Newcastle, initially connected with StreetGames through the Newcastle City Council’s Youth Panel. This group of young individuals actively contributes to decisions on funding allocation in the city. His journey with StreetGames began with volunteering at the Great North Run and participating in a residential programme in the Lake District.

In 2022, TJ took on a significant role as part of the Young Advisor team at the Summer Camp. He demonstrated exceptional commitment by checking in on participants and project leaders, leading activities, and maintaining regular communication with participants. TJ also played a pivotal role in showcasing the impact of Summer Camp to visiting VIPs, providing them with a tour of the site.

StreetGames Inspiration Campaign

Through the Inspiration campaign, StreetGames collaborate with partners to provide access to tickets and volunteering opportunities at major sporting events. Matchroom Boxing approached StreetGames with a work experience opportunity in the North East for a young person to come and work with their team in the lead up to the Masoud v Sanmartin fight on 11 November, 2023.

TJ, who already had a passion for conducting interviews and producing social media content, was put forward immediately and had the opportunity to shadow Matchroom Boxing’s Content Team on Media Day. This included research for the Flash Knockdown Podcast and learning about various aspects of the video editing process. TJ made such an impression he was entrusted with presenting the “In the Community” feature with East Durham ABC, showcasing the TTW amateur boxing scene.

During Fight Week Press Conference and Weigh In, TJ capitalised on valuable networking opportunities, gaining insights from notable figures such as former World Middleweight Champion Darren Barker, DAZN Lead Commentator Mike Costello, and even meeting his boxing hero, Conor Benn.

By Fight Day, TJ had become an integral part of the team, contributing to the Fight Day 5K and acting as a media chaperone during the main event. His responsibilities included escorting media members to the designated press area and supporting the Matchroom team with various tasks throughout the night.

TJ’s involvement with StreetGames and Matchroom Boxing not only allowed him to pursue his passion for boxing but also facilitated valuable skill development and unique experiences. Through this journey, TJ demonstrated remarkable capabilities, showcasing the impact that giving opportunities to young people can have on their personal and professional growth.

TJ told us about his experience working with the Matchroom team, “This is something that I’m so passionate about, to be able to experience what goes on in the run-up to a big fight has been incredible. I just wanted to say a big thank you to the team at Matchroom Boxing and to StreetGames for making this happen, I’ve enjoyed every single second of it. My dreams are coming true, from a North East lad a year ago not knowing what I wanted to do in life, to now making dreams a reality.”
